Throughout the year, the GRPM hosts several professional development and workshop opportunities for educators. Topics range from incorporating a Museum Mindset into the classroom to how to weave local histories into your teaching.

Description
The workshop seeks to empower teachers to use local history, community partnerships, and interactive resources to provide more inclusive and engaging lessons that reflect the diverse experiences of students. This initiative will help educators create classrooms where all students see their histories and identities represented, ensuring equitable access to high-quality social studies education.
Facilitators will explain four interactive, locally developed lessons that align with Michigan Department of Education standards and that will uplift the teaching of local Black history and diverse experiences in West Michigan. Attendees will leave with access to freely available educational resources, including virtual tours, local archives, and a “how-to guide” for collaborating with local community partners.

Meet the Facilitator
Matt Vriesman, teacher in Kentwood Public Schools and 2023 National History Teacher of the Year. Matt will be joined by special guests and expert facilitators, including community members with relevant lived experiences, experts in Culturally Responsive Teaching and GRPM education and archival staff.
